Transcriptions for string sextet of Rameau’s Pièces de clavecin en concerts of 1741, the Concerts en sextuor were published by Saint-Saëns in the monumental edition of Rameau’s works that he undertook in the nineteenth century for Durand. Hitherto they had existed only in a manuscript bearing the name Decroix and dated 1768 (four years after the composer’s death). These concerts, consisting of typical French character pieces, evoking a place (Le Vézinet), a temperament (La Timide) or a person (La Marais), show the composer’s skills at capturing character, mood and colour. This performance on period instruments by Thibault Noally and Les Accents brings out all the warmth of this version of Rameau’s compositions.


Émanations des Pièces de clavecin en concerts de 1741, les Concerts en sextuor nous sont parvenus grâce à Camille Saint-Saëns et son édition monumentale des œuvres de Rameau. Le manuscrit original de cette transcription, daté de 1768 (quatre ans après la mort de Rameau), porte le nom “Decroix”. Ces concerts, qui font se succéder des pièces de caractères à la française, évoquant tantôt un tempérament (La Timide), un lieu (Le Vézinet) ou haut personnage (La Marais), témoignent du talent de portraitiste de Rameau qui parvient, en quelques mesures, à capturer une atmosphère, un caractère ou une couleur. L’interprétation sur instruments historiques de Thibault Noally et des Accents des cinq premiers Concerts rend tout son brillant à cette magnifique musique.
